FAQ

WHAT KIND OF QUESTIONS CAN THE CONTENT PROVIDERS ASK THE HELPDESK SERVICE?

You can ask questions about any technical issues, and make suggestions or requests. You should specify the issue area in the e-mail subject and give further details in the e-mail body. The following will answer:

  • Gordon McKenna and Regine Stein: About ‘Mapping' (difficulties in editing mapping, using LIDO, etc.).
  • Nasos Drosopoulos and NTUA team: About ‘Software' issues (problems with the tool, bugs, malfunctioning, etc.).
  • Marzia Piccininno and Valentina Vassallo: About ‘Workflow' (questions on ingestion procedure, suggestions, need of an intermediate, etc.).

All the above: About the ‘Ingestion' (doubts with the ingestion steps, problems with Europeana, etc.).

Also the providers can give suggestions about topics that have already faced successfully.

WHAT KIND OF CONTENT DOES EUROPEANA ACCEPT?

You can supply to Europeana metadata about digital content which has one of the following formats: text, image, sound, video (Europeana does not accept catalogue records without one of these).

HOW DOES EUROPEANA RECEIVE OUR CONTENT?

The metadata is harvested by Europeana via the Linked Heritage ingestion system.

WHAT KIND OF FORMAT DO WE GIVE TO EUROPEANA?

Whatever your format your metadata (in XML) is in you should map it to LIDO using the MINT ingestion tool. However if your metadata in LIDO you only need to upload it (see below). It is then transformed into EDM, the Europeana metadata schema.

IS THERE ANY LIMITATION ON THE SIZE OF FILE THAT CAN BE UPLOADED TO THE MINT TOOL?

The maximum size for an uploaded file is 50 MB. It is possible to upload files in ZIP archives.

CAN WE UPLOAD AN XML FILE DIRECTLY IN LIDO?

You can upload an XML file in the LIDO format.. To do this activate the option ‘This import conforms to LIDO schema' for your import. Also take care that your xml file has the LIDO root element "lido:lidoWrap" and place your root "lido:lido":

WHAT DOES THE ‘PUBLISH' ICON MEAN? HOW DOES IT WORK?

The publication procedure allows the Linked Heritage experts to understand which collections are ready to be harvested by Europeana. In fact, after the providers have mapped their metadata into LIDO (and after they have signed the Europeana DEA agreement) and the Linked Heritage technical staff has approved the work done, it is possible to click on the ‘publish' icon.
Clicking on the icon, it will appear a window where it is possible to drag and drop transformed imports between the published and unpublished lists. Only transformed files can be published and those published will no longer be able to be edited. If you want to remap/edit a file, it is necessary to un-publish it, and then re-publish after re-editing.

WHAT DOES THE RED CROSS ON THE IMPORTED FILE MEAN?

The red cross on your imported file indicates that your upload failed. This means the data is not uploaded to the Linked Heritage, and of course is not available for mapping. Clicking on the red cross will show an error message that will help you finding out the problem with your file.
